Amy had a patient "Elvin" come to her this morning in critical condition. A one and a half year old boy in "wet malnutrition." Very bloated with skin coming off his buttocks. This was her first with this condition. Urgent prayer is needed. The child may not live. Amy called to ask for prayer.

Amy is also stressed that her nurse co-worker, who has been relieved of duties at La Union recently, again did not send the child on for attention in the city. He was abandoned by his mother and has been cared for by a compassionate villager who is in total poverty. He was seen at the La Union clinic but not given attention a month or so ago. Toby and Amy will have to go daily to the hospital to take food to supplement what the hospital can provide.

Follow-up, October 17, 2002:

Dear praying friends:

Elvin is a lot better.  They are keeping him dry which makes it a lot better since the skin will not deteriorate as fast.   We are going right now to visit him.  The mother, the woman who took him in, had not eaten for at least two days when we went in on Tuesday so I gave her money for meals for the both of them.  They had not officially admitted Elvin so they had not started him on food yet but the mother said just before i got there that he was officially admitted.  Lynelle just flew to the states to help a Honduran lady with a heart surgery.  so we have not wanted to bother Todd, who has the information on a mission group who helps malnourished kids.  We will probably call him today since Lynelle left yesterday.  The lady's surgery by the way is in Dayton.

Santos (one of the mountain ministers) is having problems with his chronic gastritis.  He went to the doctor yesterday.  They did the exam where they go down the mouth.  He was not planning on that exam.  He is in a lot of pain.  The doctor changed the medicine since it did not help at all.   He should probably go and get that today.  I did not tell Santos but they did a biopsy to test for cancer.
